A Small Gem In The Sun

A small gem in the sun

The slap of waves on rocks

a peeping sun

climbing over the Taygetus mountains

heralds the day

a procession of small fishing boats

with proud catches

chug by

slow throttle

peaked caps

scaly oilskins

heading into the cleft port of Aghios Nicholaos

the day has the same rhythm

as in ages past

quieter but moving in time

with the waves and the sun

life gleaned from the bounty of the sea

scratched from the rocky soil

to bloom into a myriad of wild flowers

a cornucopia of fresh fruit and vegetables

olives, grapes, figs, aubergines, juicy tomatoes,

sharp white onions, pomegranates, lemons

the ingredients of fine simple food

setting the table for this

small simple paradise in the sun
